AN EYE TO THE FUTURE: CLIMATE CHANGE OVER THE NEXT 80 YEARS

The Functional Centre, Arpa Valle d'Aosta, the Montagna Sicura Foundation and the CIMA International Competence Centre have finalised an activity carried out in recent years aiming at estimating climate changes in Aosta Valley over the next 80 years and the consequent impacts on the hydrological cycle. The study focuses mainly on rainfalls, snowfalls, temperatures, glaciers, stream flows and the risk of floods and droughts. The study was carried out following experiences of high scientific value such as the results of the "Agreement between the Autonomous Region of Valle d'Aosta and the CIMA Foundation for the analysis of climate change scenarios" and the European Project "Interreg ALCOTRA AdaPT Mont-Blanc".

For the analysis, the most up-to-date climate models were used and calibrated on the Aosta Valley area by high qualified researchers and technicians, who live and know the complexity of the Aosta Valley territory.

The aim is toprovide a shared knowledge base in order to define adaptation strategies for the near future by mitigating the negative impacts of climate change and seizing the opportunities that will open up due to the consequent changes in society.

Ultimately, this activity aims to rise the Aosta Valley as a permanent laboratory for climate change in the Alpine area. This derives by the value of the scientific activities carried out, the large data availability and the territorial specificities that make the region unique in the European panorama.
