Wind speed distribution maps

The graphs show the wind speed distribution for yesterday and the current season. From the menu it is possible to change the station and the season. Some stations are located at the bottom of the valleys (Saint-Christophe, Verrès, Morgex, Villeneuve, Etroubles*,Donnas*), whereas others at higher altitude (Saint-Rhémy-en-Bosses Mont Botzalet, Valtournenche Cervinia Cime Bianche, Saint-Pierre Becca France, Cogne Grand Crot).
*Station owned by ARPA Valle d'Aosta.

The wind during the last year

The wind during the last 365 days

The following graphs show the wind during the last 365 days. From the menu it is possible to select the station and the type of parameter. The maximum daily gust of wind is the maximum speed recorded by the station in 24 hours. The maximum hourly wind is the maximum value of the mean hour data of wind speed. The mean daily wind is an average of the speed calculated during 24 hours.

Wind rose distribution maps

The following graph has been realized the data from the selected station, for the whole available period, since the installation of the station. It shows the frequency of the observations as a function of the direction of the wind. The colours indicate the velocity range, from weak to very strong.
Data are divided per season and in daily/night.
It is clear the winds are strongly influenced by the mountains. In particular, for the station placed at the bottom of the valleys, the wind show typically two dominant opposite directions (east and west, for example, at Saint-Christophe).

It is possible to nitice the seasonal variability and the breeze cycles. In particular, during the day and in the hot season the valley breeze is dominant, whereas during the night and in the winter the mountain breeze or the foehn coming from the West are dominant.
